What the Virtual School can offer
Pupil Premium
The government provides a set amount of money (£1,900) for each looked after child who is of statutory school age (5-16). In Brighton and Hove we have an arrangement that this money comes to the Virtual School and we allocate it according to need through the PEP (Personal Education Plan) process.
Not all children need this money and some children who have come into care more recently have greater need of it. This is why we use the PEP to make sure that the money is being spent on the right children at the right time.
The money must be spent to improve the educational attainment of the child but this may mean different things for different children. For some children it is additional help, for some it is special equipment and for some it is an opportunity to do something extra or extra support if they have to change schools.
If the child attends a school outside Brighton and Hove we do not have the same arrangements and have to transfer the money directly to the school but there is no reason why you, as carers, can’t ask the school to be specific about how they are using it.
Tuition
The Virtual School also has funding to offer 2 hours a week 1:1 tuition to all children in Key Stage 4 in order to ensure that they have the best chance possible to achieve grade C or above in English and Maths. Not all children will need this, which means that sometimes we are able to offer it to younger children who have missed bits of their education or who are suddenly in a good place to catch up and get ahead. This is also arranged through the PEP process.
Other support
Don’t forget that we also have a CAMHS worker and an Educational Psychologist on our team who can offer support sessions directly to you to help you keep you child engaged in education in a happy, healthy way.
